eSUN PLA-Wood Filament for 3D Printing

eSUN PLA-Wood is a decorative PLA-based filament with a natural wood-like effect for FDM/FFF 3D printing. It is designed for models that should not look like ordinary plastic, but instead need a warm wood tone, matte surface and natural visual texture. PLA-Wood is suitable for interior decor, architectural models, souvenirs, design prototypes, props, desktop accessories, miniature furniture, decorative boxes, signs, organizers, photo frames, stands and creative projects.

PLA-Wood belongs to the aesthetic filament range by eSUN. Unlike standard PLA, which usually has a more typical plastic appearance, PLA-Wood visually imitates wood. Printed models have a soft matte surface, natural color and a warmer visual character. This makes the material especially useful for parts that should look wooden while still being printed on a regular FDM 3D printer.

eSUN PLA-Wood is a PLA-based material, so it keeps many advantages of PLA: easy printing, good detail, low shrinkage and compatibility with many desktop FDM/FFF 3D printers. At the same time, because of the wood-like filler and decorative structure, PLA-Wood requires more careful attention to drying, print speed, nozzle size and slicing settings.

    What Is PLA-Wood

PLA-Wood is a PLA-based filament with a wood-like visual effect. It is not intended to replace real wood in structural applications. Its main purpose is to print models that need a natural wooden appearance, warm color and matte surface. The material is ideal when appearance, texture and presentation are more important than high mechanical or thermal performance.

The main purpose of PLA-Wood is to reduce the “plastic” look of 3D printed parts. A model printed with this filament looks softer and more natural than a model printed with regular PLA. The surface is more delicate, with a muted matte finish and a warmer decorative style. This makes PLA-Wood a strong choice for interior objects, display models, decorative prototypes and creative products.

PLA-Wood is especially useful when painting would take too much time or is not required. A standard PLA part may need sanding, priming and painting to imitate wood, while PLA-Wood already provides a wood-like base appearance directly after printing. If needed, the printed model can still be sanded, stained, painted, waxed or coated with matte varnish.

    Main Advantages of eSUN PLA-Wood

    • Natural wood-like appearance: printed models look warmer and more organic than regular PLA parts.
    • Matte and delicate surface: the surface has less shine and fits interior objects better.
    • Easier to print than engineering materials: PLA-Wood prints closer to PLA than to ABS, ASA or nylon.
    • Good detail reproduction: suitable for relief models, ornaments, signs, decorative patterns and architectural models.
    • Suitable for post-processing: printed parts can be sanded, painted, stained or varnished.
    • Five wood-inspired colors: Aspen, Walnut, Plain Wood, Oak and Birch provide different natural wood tones.
    • Compatible with many FDM/FFF printers: the filament is available in 1.75 mm diameter and supplied on a 1 kg spool.
    • Excellent for decorative printing: ideal when visual quality is more important than high impact or heat resistance.

    eSUN PLA-Wood Colors

The official eSUN PLA-Wood range includes several wood-inspired colors. Each shade has its own visual character and best application area. When choosing a color, consider not only the spool photo, but also the model geometry, lighting, wall thickness, printing temperature and post-processing method.

Official Color Color Description Visual Character Best Applications
Aspen Light aspen / light wood tone Soft, pale, natural, light beige wood-like effect Architectural models, light decor, interior accessories, miniature furniture
Walnut Walnut / dark wood tone Deeper brown tone, suitable for darker wood imitation Premium souvenirs, decorative boxes, stands, signs, vintage props
Plain Wood Natural wood / classic wood color Universal warm wood shade, not too light and not too dark Everyday decor, organizers, holders, frames, signs, gifts
Oak Oak-style wood tone Classic noble wood tone that works well on larger models Architectural elements, furniture miniatures, display stands, interior parts
Birch Birch / light wood tone Calm light shade, suitable for minimalistic models Scandinavian-style decor, light architectural models, gifts, interior accessories

Small color differences may occur between batches, spools or different storage conditions. For wood-based composite filaments, this is normal: filament moisture, nozzle temperature and extrusion speed can influence the final color and the intensity of the wood-like effect.

    Applications of eSUN PLA-Wood

PLA-Wood performs best in decorative, presentation and design applications. It is not intended for highly loaded gears, hot environments or industrial parts, but it is an excellent choice for models that need to look natural, warm and visually different from ordinary plastic.

    Interior Decor

PLA-Wood is suitable for vases, planters, decorative panels, wall elements, photo frames, stands, organizers, holders, boxes, signs and other indoor objects. The wood tone makes these prints look warmer and less plastic.

    Architectural Models

The material is useful for building models, wooden facades, stairs, beams, terraces, pavilions, bridges, interior elements and landscape objects. PLA-Wood helps represent wooden parts of a project without manually painting every component.

    Design Prototypes

PLA-Wood can be used for prototypes of furniture, handles, decorative parts, packaging, household products, stands, housings and souvenir products. If a prototype needs to communicate the idea of a wooden product, PLA-Wood provides a more realistic presentation than standard PLA.

    Souvenirs and Gifts

The filament is suitable for keychains, name plates, personalized items, gift boxes, decorative lettering, logos, figurines, phone stands, desktop souvenirs and custom accessories.

    Props and Cosplay

PLA-Wood is useful for printing props that should look like wood: wands, handles, decorative crates, vintage elements, prop weapons, theater accessories, costume parts and photo-shoot objects.

    Educational Models

The material can be used for educational models, building models, engineering structures, demonstration samples, bridge models, landscape elements and architecture, design or technology projects.

    Technical Specifications of eSUN PLA-Wood

    ⚙️ Recommended Printing Parameters

The settings below are starting points. Exact values depend on the 3D printer, hotend, extruder, nozzle, cooling system, slicer, model geometry and filament moisture. For a new spool, it is recommended to print a temperature tower, retraction test and a small textured sample before large prints.

    Parameter Recommendation Comment
Nozzle temperature 210–235 °C Start around 220 °C and adjust according to surface quality and stringing
Build plate temperature 55–65 °C Helps first-layer adhesion
Build surface PEI Other PLA-compatible surfaces may also work with proper Z-offset
Nozzle size 0.4 / 0.6 / 0.8 mm 0.2 mm nozzles are not recommended because wood-filled materials may clog
Print speed Up to 150 mm/s For better wood effect and surface consistency, slower speeds may be preferred
Fan speed 100 % Important for overhangs, small details and clean corners
Drying 55–60 °C for about 8 hours The material contains wood/plant-based components and is moisture-sensitive
Retraction Printer-specific If stringing appears, lower temperature and tune retraction
Enclosure Not required PLA-Wood usually prints without an enclosed chamber

How to Get a Better Wood-Like Effect

PLA-Wood looks best on models with relief, smooth curves, texture, chamfers and larger visible surfaces. On very small and completely smooth objects, the wood-like effect may be less visible. On larger decorative parts, the effect looks more natural and convincing.

    • Use 0.16–0.24 mm layer height: very thin layers may reduce visible texture, while very thick layers may make the surface too rough.
    • Do not print too fast: moderate speed helps achieve a more consistent surface and color.
    • Dry the filament: wet PLA-Wood may cause stringing, bubbles, rough surface and unstable color.
    • Use a 0.4 mm or larger nozzle: wood-like fillers increase clogging risk in small nozzles.
    • Tune temperature for the color: with some wood-like materials, temperature may slightly influence the final shade.
    • Use textured models: wood PLA looks better on relief, ornaments, board patterns, beams, carvings and natural shapes.
    • Try post-processing: sanding, staining and varnishing can enhance the natural wood impression.

    Post-Processing PLA-Wood Prints

PLA-Wood is suitable for post-processing. Depending on the project, the model can be used directly after printing or further processed for a more realistic result.

    Sanding

Light sanding helps remove small defects, support marks and visible layer lines. Start with coarser sandpaper and move to finer grit. Avoid overheating the surface because PLA can soften.

    Staining

The model can be tinted with acrylic paints, dry brushing or other decorative methods. Darker tones can emphasize grooves, texture and relief.

    Varnishing

Matte or semi-matte varnish protects the surface and makes the model look more finished. Glossy varnish may reduce the natural wood effect, so matte coating is usually better for interior decor.

    Wood Grain Simulation

For a stronger effect, use a model that already includes wood texture: grain lines, boards, rings, carved elements, uneven surfaces and natural relief.

    3D Printer Compatibility

eSUN PLA-Wood in 1.75 mm diameter is compatible with many FDM/FFF 3D printers that can print PLA at around 210–235 °C and have a heated bed. It can be used with popular printers from Creality, Anycubic, Bambu Lab, Prusa, Elegoo, QIDI, Flashforge, Artillery, Sovol, AnkerMake, Raise3D, Voron and other open-material systems.

    • Direct Drive: works well with PLA-Wood and provides stable feeding.
    • Bowden: also possible, but retraction and filament dryness are more important.
    • 0.4 mm nozzle: practical minimum for most applications.
    • 0.6 mm nozzle: a good choice for large models, vases, decor and lower clogging risk.
    • 0.8 mm nozzle: suitable for large decorative parts with strong texture.
    • 0.2 mm nozzle: not recommended for wood-filled composites due to higher clogging risk.

PLA-Wood Compared with Other Decorative Filaments

Material Visual Effect Best Applications Notes
PLA-Wood Wood-like appearance, warm matte surface Decor, models, signs, props, miniature furniture Requires drying and 0.4 mm or larger nozzle
PLA-Marble Marble-like stone effect Statues, columns, busts, architectural decor Helps hide layer lines
PLA-Rock Stone or concrete-like texture Terrain models, rocks, bases, architecture Good for natural and construction-style textures
PLA-Metal Metal-like visual effect Trophies, awards, cosplay, decorative parts Not real metal, but imitates metallic appearance
PLA-Silk Glossy silk shine Vases, figurines, gifts, art objects Looks best on smooth curved shapes
PLA-Matte Solid matte surface Design, architecture, housings, minimalist decor Less natural than PLA-Wood but more universal in color choice

    Limitations of PLA-Wood

PLA-Wood is a decorative filament and should be used according to its purpose. It does not replace engineering materials and is not suitable for all technical applications.

    • Not for high temperatures: because of its PLA base, it should not be used near heaters, inside hot cars or under constant heat.
    • Not for unprotected outdoor use: the material is not designed for continuous UV, moisture and weather exposure.
    • Not for chemical environments: PLA-Wood is not intended for contact with acids, alkalis or aggressive chemicals.
    • Not for 0.2 mm nozzles: wood-like components can increase clogging risk.
    • Not for flexible parts: the material is rigid and does not replace TPU, TPE or PEBA.
    • Not for food-contact parts without product-level certification: even if a material is safe to print, FDM parts have layer lines and a porous surface.

    Storage Recommendations

PLA-Wood contains wood-like or plant-based components, so it is more moisture-sensitive than some standard PLA filaments. Wet filament may print worse and cause bubbles, popping sounds, stringing, rough surface, unstable extrusion and color differences.

    • Store the spool in a sealed bag or dry box.
    • Use silica gel or another desiccant.
    • Do not leave PLA-Wood open on the desk for several days.
    • Before important prints, dry the filament at 55–60 °C for about 8 hours.
    • After printing, return the spool to a sealed bag or container.
    • Do not overheat the spool during drying to avoid deformation.

    Common Problems and Solutions

    Problem Possible Cause Solution
Nozzle clogging Nozzle too small, wet filament, overheating in the hotend Use a 0.4 mm or larger nozzle, dry the filament and avoid leaving material in a hot nozzle for too long
Stringing High temperature, moisture, wrong retraction settings Lower temperature, dry the spool, tune retraction and travel speed
Rough surface Wet filament or unstable extrusion Dry the material, check the nozzle and calibrate flow
Poor detail Print speed too high or layer height too large Reduce speed and use 0.16–0.2 mm layers for detailed models
Poor bed adhesion Incorrect Z-offset, dirty surface, low bed temperature Clean the bed, tune the first layer and use 55–65 °C bed temperature
Color variation on the model Moisture, temperature fluctuation, changing print speed Dry the material, stabilize temperature and reduce sudden speed changes
