    eSUN PLA-Rock Stone-Effect Filament for 3D Printing

eSUN PLA-Rock is a decorative PLA filament for FDM/FFF 3D printing with a natural stone-like effect, matte surface and two-color gradient that imitates the layered structure of rocks. This material is designed for models that should not look like ordinary plastic, but instead need a realistic stone texture: rocks, statues, architectural elements, dioramas, bases, decorative panels, cosplay props, miniatures, mockups, landscape models and art objects.

PLA-Rock belongs to the aesthetic material range by eSUN. Unlike standard PLA, which usually produces a solid-color smooth surface, PLA-Rock creates a natural rock-like appearance. Printed models have a matte, slightly frosted surface, while the two-color transition helps create the feeling of rock layers, veins and natural geological variation.

This filament is especially useful when regular PLA looks too simple and hand-painting a stone effect would take too much time. PLA-Rock provides a decorative stone effect directly during printing. At the same time, it keeps many advantages of PLA materials: easy printing, good stability, compatibility with most FDM/FFF 3D printers and no need for an enclosed chamber.

    What Is PLA-Rock

PLA-Rock is a PLA filament with decorative stone aesthetics. It is not real stone and is not intended to replace mineral materials in construction or structural applications. Its purpose is to visually imitate stone, rock, mineral, concrete or natural geological texture in 3D printed models.

The main feature of PLA-Rock is the combination of a matte formula and a two-color gradient. The matte surface reduces plastic shine, while the color transitions create the illusion of layered rock structure. Because of this, even simple geometry can look more interesting than when printed with standard PLA.

The material performs best on models with relief, chamfers, texture, recesses and complex surfaces. On a smooth cube, the effect is visible but less expressive. On rocks, stone walls, statues, columns, landscapes, dioramas and fantasy models, PLA-Rock looks much more natural.

    Main Advantages of eSUN PLA-Rock

    • Natural stone-like appearance: the material imitates rock texture and layered geological transitions.
    • Matte surface: printed models reflect less light and look less plastic.
    • Two-color gradient: color transitions create the effect of geological layers and natural variation.
    • 8 rock-inspired colors: Blueschist, Hornfels, Limestone, Pegmatite, Quartzite, Tiger-Porphyry, Granite and Sandstone.
    • Good printability: PLA-Rock keeps the convenient printing behavior of eSUN’s PLA series.
    • Beginner-friendly: easier to use than ABS, ASA, PA or carbon-fiber composites.
    • Stable long-duration printing: designed for continuous printing of larger decorative models.
    • Reduced clogging risk: the material is designed for stable printing and fewer nozzle issues.
    • Great for decor and cosplay: suitable for stone, rock, ancient, architectural and fantasy elements.

    eSUN PLA-Rock Colors

eSUN PLA-Rock is available in 8 color options inspired by different rock types. Each shade has its own visual character, so the material can be selected not only by color but also by the atmosphere of the final model: dark rock, light limestone, sandstone, granite, schist, quartzite or decorative porphyry texture.

Official Color Description Visual Character Best Applications
Blueschist Blue schist / bluish-gray stone Cold schist-like shade with a geological character Rocks, dioramas, fantasy landscapes, dungeons, stone platforms
Hornfels Hornfels / dark metamorphic rock Dark, strict, volcanic or rocky visual effect Ruins, fortresses, dark rocks, military models, gothic decor
Limestone Limestone / light stone Soft light stone tone similar to natural limestone Architectural models, columns, statues, light walls, antique decor
Pegmatite Pegmatite / mineral stone texture Expressive mineral shade with decorative character Minerals, fantasy artifacts, crystal rocks, decorative bases
Quartzite Quartzite / light gray stone Clean stone shade suitable for architecture and sculpture Statues, building models, bridges, stone walls, decorative elements
Tiger-Porphyry Tiger porphyry / contrast porphyry texture The most expressive and contrast-rich option for visible models Art objects, large bases, fantasy props, souvenirs, sculptures
Granite Granite / gray stone Classic universal stone effect Architecture, dioramas, monuments, bases, columns, city models
Sandstone Sandstone / warm sandy stone Warm beige-sandy tone with a natural decorative look Desert dioramas, ancient ruins, temples, castles, natural landscapes

When choosing a color, consider the model size. On larger parts, the gradient becomes more visible, while on small miniatures it may appear as a softer transition. Infill also affects the final look: changing infill density can visually change the gradient range and color transition behavior.

    Applications of eSUN PLA-Rock

PLA-Rock is best suited for aesthetic, decorative and presentation models. It is a material for visual impact rather than highly loaded engineering parts. Choose it when stone texture, matte finish and natural appearance are more important than maximum strength.

    Dioramas and Landscape Models

PLA-Rock is excellent for printing rocks, mountains, stone platforms, bases, canyons, caves, ruins, bridges, walls and natural elements. It helps create a stone-like appearance without complex manual painting.

    Architectural Models

The filament can be used for columns, facades, stone walls, stairs, decorative elements, bridges, historical buildings, temples, castles and city models. PLA-Rock is especially useful in architecture where stone, concrete, limestone, granite or sandstone must be represented.

    Statues and Sculptures

The matte stone surface is suitable for busts, figurines, miniatures, decorative figures, mythological characters, antique sculptures and souvenirs. The model looks more sculptural than when printed with glossy standard PLA.

    Cosplay and Props

PLA-Rock is useful for fantasy props: stone amulets, artifacts, rune tablets, armor details, ancient slab imitations, magical crystals, stage elements and photo-shoot objects.

    Tabletop Games and Miniatures

The material is suitable for terrain, bases, walls, towers, ruins, dungeon parts, platforms, stone barricades and tabletop scenery. Even without painting, these parts look more thematic than solid-color PLA.

    Interior Decor

PLA-Rock can be used for vases, planters, stands, decorative panels, desktop accessories, frames, lamps, stone tile imitation and art objects. Limestone, Sandstone, Granite and Quartzite work especially well for interior applications.

    Educational Models

PLA-Rock is useful for educational models in geology, architecture, history, archaeology and design. It can be used to print rock samples, landscapes, ancient structures, cave models and geological objects.

    Technical Specifications of eSUN PLA-Rock

PLA-Rock is a decorative PLA material, but it also has stable technical parameters. Its main value is visual appearance, but quality printing still requires attention to density, temperature, speed, cooling and matte formula behavior.

    ⚙️ Recommended Printing Parameters

PLA-Rock prints similarly to PLA-Matte and other eSUN PLA materials, but a good stone-like effect requires proper tuning of temperature, speed, cooling and infill. Too high temperature can reduce surface quality, while too low temperature can weaken layer adhesion.

    Parameter Recommendation Comment
Nozzle temperature 210–230 °C Start at 215–220 °C and adjust based on surface, stringing and layer adhesion
Bed temperature 45–60 °C Helps stable first-layer adhesion
Cooling 100 % Important for overhangs, relief, small details and matte surface
Printing speed 40–300 mm/s For better decorative models, moderate speeds are often preferred
Outer wall speed 40–80 mm/s Lower speed improves stone-like surface quality
Nozzle 0.4 mm Universal option for most models
Nozzle for large models 0.6 mm Useful for rocks, vases, walls, large dioramas and architectural elements
Layer height 0.16–0.28 mm Thin layers for detail, thicker layers for rough stone texture
Infill 10–25 % for decor, higher for stronger parts Changing infill may affect the visible gradient range
Enclosure Not required Avoid overly high ambient temperature

How to Get a Better Stone Effect

To make PLA-Rock look as natural as possible, the model and settings should match the material. The stone aesthetic works best on textured, uneven and three-dimensional forms. A smooth simple model will still show a matte gradient look, but the natural rock effect will be less expressive.

    • Use relief models: rocks, ruins, columns, stone walls, statues and terrain reveal the material best.
    • Do not print too hot: excessive temperature may reduce surface definition and increase stringing.
    • Print outer walls slower: this improves texture quality and cleaner layer appearance.
    • Experiment with infill: changing infill density can affect the visible color-gradient range.
    • Use different layer heights: 0.16 mm is suitable for statues and miniatures, while 0.24–0.28 mm works well for rough rocks and walls.
    • Choose the right color: Sandstone for desert ruins, Granite for classic stone, Blueschist for cold rocks, Limestone for architecture.
    • Add post-processing: dry brushing, light wash and matte varnish can enhance the stone effect.

    Post-Processing PLA-Rock Prints

PLA-Rock looks good directly after printing, but post-processing can make the model even more realistic. This is especially useful for dioramas, tabletop terrain, cosplay props, architectural models and sculptures.

    Dry Brushing

Dry brushing helps highlight raised stone details. A light paint is applied with an almost dry brush over the relief, emphasizing edges, cracks, layers and corners.

    Wash for Recesses

A dark wash helps deepen shadows and makes the model look more three-dimensional. This method works especially well on stone walls, ruins, rocks, slabs and relief ornaments.

    Sanding

Natural stone does not always need a perfectly smooth surface. Light sanding can remove seams and support marks, but too much smoothing may make the stone effect less expressive.

    Matte Varnish

Matte varnish helps protect the model and keep a natural look. Gloss varnish is usually not recommended if the goal is to preserve stone texture without plastic shine.

PLA-Rock Compared with Other eSUN Decorative Filaments

Material Visual Effect Best Applications Features
PLA-Rock Stone, rock, layered mineral texture, matte gradient effect Rocks, dioramas, architecture, ruins, cosplay, statues 8 stone colors, two-color gradient, matte surface
PLA-Wood Wood and timber texture Furniture miniatures, signs, interior objects, props Better for wooden objects than stone models
PLA-Marble Marble-like surface Statues, columns, busts, antique decor Cleaner and more classical effect than PLA-Rock
PLA-Matte Solid matte surface Design, architecture, housings, minimalism No stone gradient, but more universal
PLA-Metal Metal-like decorative look Trophies, artifacts, awards, cosplay Imitates metal rather than natural stone
PLA-Silk Silky glossy shine Vases, figurines, gifts, decorative models Bright gloss, opposite to matte stone aesthetics

    Limitations of PLA-Rock

PLA-Rock is an aesthetic material and should be used according to its purpose. It is excellent for decorative and model applications, but it does not replace engineering plastics.

    • Not for high temperatures: as a PLA-based material, it is not suitable for hot zones, summer car interiors or parts near heaters.
    • Not for permanent outdoor use: for outdoor parts, ASA or another weather-resistant material is a better choice.
    • Not for strong impact loads: the material is rigid and decorative, not intended for extreme mechanical loads.
    • Not for flexible parts: if elasticity is required, use TPU, TPE or PEBA.
    • Not for chemical environments: it is not intended for contact with aggressive liquids, solvents, acids or alkalis.
    • Not for food-contact parts without product-level certification: FDM parts have layered and micro-porous surfaces.

    3D Printer Compatibility

eSUN PLA-Rock in 1.75 mm diameter is compatible with most FDM/FFF 3D printers that support PLA printing at 210–230 °C nozzle temperature and 45–60 °C heated bed. It can be used on Creality, Anycubic, Bambu Lab, Prusa, Elegoo, QIDI, Flashforge, Artillery, Sovol, AnkerMake, Raise3D, Voron and other open-filament printers.

    • Direct Drive: good for stable feeding and accurate decorative prints.
    • Bowden: also suitable with proper retraction and temperature tuning.
    • Brass nozzle: usually acceptable because PLA-Rock is not a carbon-fiber filament.
    • 0.4 mm nozzle: best universal choice for most models.
    • 0.6 mm nozzle: useful for large rocks, vases, walls, bases and architectural elements.
    • Enclosure: not required; overly high ambient temperature may reduce print quality.

    Storage Recommendations

PLA-Rock should be stored dry like other quality PLA filaments. Moisture can reduce surface quality, cause stringing, bubbles, popping, unstable extrusion and weaker layer adhesion.

    • Store the spool in a sealed bag or container.
    • Use silica gel or another desiccant.
    • Do not leave the spool open for a long time in a humid room.
    • Before important prints, check the filament for signs of moisture.
    • If stringing, bubbles or rough surface appear, dry the material.
    • After printing, return the spool to a dry container.

Common PLA-Rock Printing Problems and Solutions

    Problem Possible Cause Solution
Too much stringing High temperature, wet filament, incorrect retraction Lower temperature, tune retraction, dry the spool
Surface is too glossy Temperature too high or wrong profile Lower temperature, increase cooling, print outer walls slower
Poor first layer Wrong Z-offset, dirty surface, low bed temperature Clean the bed, tune first layer, use 45–60 °C
Weak layer adhesion Temperature too low or speed too high Increase temperature, reduce speed, check cooling
Gradient is barely visible Small model, wrong color choice, infill behavior Use a larger model, change infill, choose a more contrasting color
Model still looks too plastic Too smooth geometry or glossy post-processing Use textured geometry, matte varnish, dry brushing or wash
